He lives in Philadelphia with a French bulldog and two chatty parrots. Born in western Kentucky, he went to college at Wake Forest University. All in all this was still a decent summertime spooky read, even if it wasn’t all that spooky. Shawn Sarles is the Indie Bestselling Author of Campfire, Mary, Will I Die, and the forthcoming A Pocket Full of Posies. Had the characters had more substance to them, this would have been an even better read. Maddie herself was a very flat character who I really couldn’t see myself rooting for long term. Although I understood why there had to be so many minor characters. There were a lot of characters in the story, Maddie’s family, that I just didn’t feel anything for. The story had a very B-Horror movie vibe too it which would have been made even better had I really felt connected to the characters. I loved that the campfire stories that were told had their own chapters. The story started out a little slow but picked up mid way through. The story follows Maddie Davenport and her big family and Caleb, the swoon worth mountain guide, on a family camping trip to celebrate Maddie’s older brother Charlie graduating high school. While this wasn’t my favorite book ever it also wasn’t my least favorite either. I was super excited when I saw this title making its way around bookstagram and knew I had to give it a shot. I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

In fact, the work has indisputable prescience, not only as a radical feminist analysis light-years ahead of its time, predicting artificial insemination, ATMs, and a feminist uprising against under-representation in the arts, but also as a stunning testament to the rage of an abused and destitute woman. SCUM Manifesto was considered one of the most outrageous, violent and certifiably crazy tracts when it first appeared in 1968. Life in this society being, at best, an utter bore and no aspect of society being at all relevant to women, there remains to civic-minded, responsible, thrill-seeking females only to overthrow the government, eliminate the money system, institute complete automation and destroy the male sex. My fourth book by Frank McCourt and I am still impressed. Some of the autobiographical stuff could have been left out-too much information sometimes. I do think this is a more honest perception of teaching (especially the first part where he is working in the "tougher" schools during his first few years) than many other movies I've seen that try to portray teaching. While I do admire some of his methods, and enjoy his writing style, I found that the times when he let his true sentiments show (like telling a kid to stop being so ignorant and have some respect for the English language, or having days where you were just sick of whining teenagers.does that make me mean or already jaded?)or when he simply let the student anecdotes speak for themselves, were my favorite parts of the book. While I appreciated McCourt's attempt to recognize teachers (especially English teachers) and the work (often underappreciated) that we do, I felt that his theory of if we all "think outside the box" and try to be friendly with our students, than we will have a successful teaching career, a bit unrealistic, overly idealistic, and in many ways, condescending. Their lives will all intertwine and come crashing together in a shocking way, one that could only happen in this enchanting, dangerous city. And there's Blake, a drifter hiding in the desert, doing his best to fight off his most violent instincts. There's Tony, a bored and unhappy lawyer who is inspired by the runner. There's Britt, who shows up at the commune harboring a dark secret. There's Owen and James, teenage twins who live in a desert commune, where their father, a self-proclaimed healer, holds a powerful sway over his disciples. There's Ren, just out of juvie, who travels to LA in search of his mother. The strange sight makes the local news and captures the imaginations of a stunning cast of misfits and lost souls. It is civil war as a national celebration of heroism and reconciliation. Everybody in this account who fights nobly and doggedly is virtuous and heroic. It is easy reading, the narrative and characterisation will lead them on.Īs a history of the American Civil War what strikes me from this excerpt is that there is no sense of their being any villains, the emphasis is rather on noble and heroic struggle. It's just the kind of thing to give to a child who is interested in history and enjoys stories or perhaps to an adult who isn't a confident reader. The leading figures (naturally tending to be the officers) come across as heroes with moral virtues clearly on display. It is a good modern example of history as drama. Since the complete three volume book is one which I haven't read I can attest that this little volume that just deals with the battle of Gettysburg is free standing. David Sprague and Ira Robbins wrote in Trouser Press that the album "careens from free-jazz-backed spoken word to bug-eyed metal in a manner every bit as fierce and feral as Kramer's golden age." Entertainment Weekly 's Mike Flaherty was less favorable, describing the album as "a bombastic album dominated by tales of ’90s-style sociopolitical decay" and giving it a C+. the Hard Stuff shows to be in full command of his jam-kicking facilities," while praising the album's "vital rawness".
